Port of Madang

Madang operates on a local time 10 hours ahead of GMT, boasting a consistent humid and tropical climate. The region experiences a generally wet season from November to March and a dry season from April to September, maintaining an average daily temperature of 27ºC along with medium to high humidity levels.

Madang Harbor offers secure and deep harbor facilities suitable for cruise ships and private yachts. It provides easy accessibility to the airport, road network, and is a gateway to both the Highlands and Sepik. The Madang wharf is positioned just 500 meters from both the Madang Resort and Kalibobo Village, ensuring proximity and seamless accessibility for travellers. The harbour can accommodate vessels with a maximum draft of 11 meters, facilitating easy and safe entry.

Madang Pilotage services overview

  • Pilotage services are accessible daily from 0600 to 1800.

  • The boarding station is located at LAT: 05º 13.26'S ; LONG: 145º 50.06'E. (2.2 nautical miles from the dock)

  • The entire piloting manoeuvre is conducted within an estimated duration of 30 minutes.

  • The harbour's approach allows vessels with a maximum draft of 11 meters, ensuring no separate docking pilot is required for the manoeuvre.

  • The call sign for pilotage services is "Madang Pilot."

  • Communication is facilitated on VHF Channels 16 & 12

  • Vessels are requested to report essential details including Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA), Draft, Air Draft, and Boarding Arrangement during the communication process.

Our Services

In terms of port services, our communication infrastructure includes mobile telephone services. For port control, Madang Port Control can be contacted on VHF Channel 16 & 12, and MTS Agency Radio on VHF Channel 82, ensuring smooth communication between vessels and authorities. Contact can be made daily from 0600 to 1800. In Papua New Guinea, a tugboat attendance is compulsory for vessels over 25m, and a tug (2000HP) can be organised through MTS.

Visitors should be aware of the strict customs regulations, with any undeclared drugs or weapons leading to severe penalties, including vessel seizure and crew arrest. As a cautionary note, foreign vessels must provide a minimum 24 hours notice before entering PNG waters or a port.
